Medical Research on the Effects of CBD for Anxiety

Medical Research on the Effects of CBD for Anxiety

You know the feeling. You’re on a deadline at work, or you just received an unexpected bill in the mail, or perhaps your child just went to her first day of school…ever. Your palms are sweaty, you’re short of breath, your chest feels tight and it’s hard to concentrate. This is anxiety, and you’ve felt it before. Sometimes you feel it every day of the week.

Anxiety gets a bad rap, but it’s actually an evolutionary response designed to help us react to threats to our safety, welfare, or environment. Anxiety can motivate us to avoid danger, to perform better, or to approach a difficult situation and resolve it.  It’s when anxiety starts to interfere with our daily activities that it can become problematic. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), characterized by persistent and excessive worry about things such as money, health, family, or work, is just one of many anxiety disorders recognized by the American Psychiatric Association.

Anxiety and anxiety-related disorders affect a huge segment of our population. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 19% of US adults 18 and older experienced an anxiety disorder in the past year, and 31% of adults 18 and older have experienced an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives. That’s a lot of folks like you and me! With such a prevalence of anxiety disorders, researchers are constantly looking for the best treatment.

These days, anxiety disorders are often treated with a combination of cognitive therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This treatment can be effective, but not everyone responds well to the latter. Side effects of SSRIs include drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, diarrhea, nervousness and dizziness.

Fortunately, early research shows promising signs that CBD may be an effective alternative treatment for many anxiety disorders. While researchers are not yet certain how CBD works to alleviate anxiety-related symptoms - some theorize that CBD oil may influence receptors in the brain involved in the modulation of serotonin, while others believe that CBD may interact with various ion channels in the brain to produce a therapeutic effect – the studies conducted so far certainly demonstrate a level of effectiveness.

Further research is currently being conducted. In the meantime, CBD has been used for years as a self-treatment for anxiety, from everyday worries to the more worrisome disorders. According to a 2018 survey published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, almost 62 percent of cannabidiol users reported that they used CBD to treat a medical condition, with the top three conditions being pain, anxiety, and depression. The internet is filled with success stories from users of CBD that have not only alleviated anxiety itself, but also other symptoms such as insomnia and pain.

Humans are not the only ones that may benefit from CBD’s potential ability to alleviate anxiety. Dogs also have the receptors that aforementioned research suggests are positively affected by CBD treatments. According to PetMD, a survey published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that 72% of the people surveyed reported using a hemp product for their pet, with 64% reporting that they were certain it helped their pets. Our furry friends are family, and if CBD oil might help alleviate their fear of thunder, why not?

Here at Fully Activated CBD, we’ll continue watching the research as it continues to expound the many beneficial effects of CBD oil as a treatment for anxiety. In 2018, the research really started to pick up, and we are excited to see what 2019 will bring!

How Does CBD Work with the Endocannabinoid System?

How Does CBD Work with the Endocannabinoid System?

    What is a Cannabinoid?

A cannabinoid is a chemical compound found in plants and the human body.  Plant cannabinoids are known as phytocannabinoids, and cannabinoids made by mammals are known as endocannabinoids.  You may have heard of a few popular phytocannabinoids, such as THC and CBD which are found in the cannabis plant, along with over 100 more like CBG & CBN.

Cannabinoid receptors (microscopic connectors where cannabinoids interact with the body) are found most concentrated in the central and peripheral nervous systems.  While the human brain has the most known cannabinoid receptors, the heart, adrenal glands, male & female reproductive organs, lungs, bone marrow, and tonsils also have receptors.  Humans are not the only ones with endocannabinoid systems since your dog & lizard have them, too!  Read more about Pets and CBD

How Does the Endocannabinoid System Work?

Cannabinoids & cannabinoid receptors make up the endocannabinoid system.  Cannabinoids bind with the cannabinoid receptors in the body to effect its communication system, also known as your neurotransmitters.  For example, neurotransmitters receive information from your nerve endings that you’re touching something hot and send the signal your brain.  In return, your brain responds by signaling your hand to move off of the stove.  Neurotransmitters can also tell the brain when you get the flu so it can send healthy cells to fight the infection, or when you break your arm.  Cannabinoids, like CBD (cannabidiol), have been shown to potentially down-regulate the inflammatory response in the body and reduce chronic pain.  Ultimately, CBD interferes to reduce pain-causing inflammation.  Read more on CBD and Pain

Studies on CBD have shown that it does not appear to have psychotropic effects, meaning you won’t feel high like with THC, but it may have anti-anxiety  effects.  Commonly, CBD comes in two varieties - Full Spectrum Distillate, meaning it offers an array of CBD with other cannabinoids & terpenes, or Isolate, which comes in powder form and it 90%+ pure CBD without other cannabinoids.  Read more on Full Spectrum vs Isolate

CBD can be taken a number of ways: inhalation through smoking or vaporizing, buccal or sublingually under the tongue, swallowed internally, or used topically on the skin.   There are a wide number of products out there like topical skin salves, under the tongue tinctures, CBD-only isolate, Full spectrum distillate, capsules, oils, vape juice, and many others.  See what we have to offer!

Natural, High Quality CBD For My Pets and Me

Natural, High Quality CBD For My Pets and Me

Why wouldn’t you want to treat your pets as well as you treat yourself? At Fully Activated, we create yummy pet treats and tinctures for our furry friends and use the same standards as we do for our human products. This means that Buca Biscuits, our CBD dog treats, are organic & GMO-free, and each biscuit contains exactly the amount of CBD as stated.

Precision and quality control is very important to us. We only use the best ingredients from organic sources, and we create everything in small batches - each time. Other products may not be clear on where they are coming from or how they're being made, the health of our pets and our customers is of utmost importance to us. Many real life experiences and several studies have proven that animals (most notably, dogs) can potentially experience similar benefits from CBD that humans feel.

Research on pets and the use of CBD is still new, but the evidence is extremely positive so far. As Gary Richter, DVM, says, “animals can benefit…for many of the same reasons it helps people – for pain, seizure control, gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety-related issues.”

We use CBD as a preventative daily treatment and on specific ailments for our petts and have for more than a decade. Since our pets have endocannabinoid systems, just like we do, it only makes sense.

What's the Difference between Full Spectrum CBD & Pure CBD?

What's the Difference between Full Spectrum CBD & Pure CBD?

There are hundreds of cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, as well as, endocannabinoids in the body.  Endocannabinoids & the endocannabinoid system are found in humans, animals, & fish.  The human endocannabinoid system consists of a network of receptors throughout the body, like organs, brain, glands, tissues, and immune cells.  The endocannabinoids can help regulate and influence several bodily functions like pain, pleasure, muscle control, mood, appetite, memory, and more.

CBD commonly comes in two forms: Full Spectrum CBD Distillate & Pure CBD Isolate.
