Medical Research on the Effects of CBD for Anxiety

You know the feeling. You’re on a deadline at work, or you just received an unexpected bill in the mail, or perhaps your child just went to her first day of school…ever. Your palms are sweaty, you’re short of breath, your chest feels tight and it’s hard to concentrate. This is anxiety, and you’ve felt it before. Sometimes you feel it every day of the week.

Anxiety gets a bad rap, but it’s actually an evolutionary response designed to help us react to threats to our safety, welfare, or environment. Anxiety can motivate us to avoid danger, to perform better, or to approach a difficult situation and resolve it.  It’s when anxiety starts to interfere with our daily activities that it can become problematic. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), characterized by persistent and excessive worry about things such as money, health, family, or work, is just one of many anxiety disorders recognized by the American Psychiatric Association.

Anxiety and anxiety-related disorders affect a huge segment of our population. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 19% of US adults 18 and older experienced an anxiety disorder in the past year, and 31% of adults 18 and older have experienced an anxiety disorder at some time in their lives. That’s a lot of folks like you and me! With such a prevalence of anxiety disorders, researchers are constantly looking for the best treatment.

These days, anxiety disorders are often treated with a combination of cognitive therapy and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This treatment can be effective, but not everyone responds well to the latter. Side effects of SSRIs include drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, insomnia, diarrhea, nervousness and dizziness.

Fortunately, early research shows promising signs that CBD may be an effective alternative treatment for many anxiety disorders. While researchers are not yet certain how CBD works to alleviate anxiety-related symptoms – some theorize that CBD oil may influence receptors in the brain involved in the modulation of serotonin, while others believe that CBD may interact with various ion channels in the brain to produce a therapeutic effect – the studies conducted so far certainly demonstrate a level of effectiveness.

Further research is currently being conducted. In the meantime, CBD has been used for years as a self-treatment for anxiety, from everyday worries to the more worrisome disorders. According to a 2018 survey published in Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research, almost 62 percent of cannabidiol users reported that they used CBD to treat a medical condition, with the top three conditions being pain, anxiety, and depression. The internet is filled with success stories from users of CBD that have not only alleviated anxiety itself, but also other symptoms such as insomnia and pain.

Humans are not the only ones that may benefit from CBD’s potential ability to alleviate anxiety. Dogs also have the receptors that aforementioned research suggests are positively affected by CBD treatments. According to PetMD, a survey published in the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that 72% of the people surveyed reported using a hemp product for their pet, with 64% reporting that they were certain it helped their pets. Our furry friends are family, and if CBD oil might help alleviate their fear of thunder, why not?

Here at Fully Activated CBD, we’ll continue watching the research as it continues to expound the many beneficial effects of CBD oil as a treatment for anxiety. In 2018, the research really started to pick up, and we are excited to see what 2019 will bring!

How Does CBD Work with the Endocannabinoid System?

What is a Cannabinoid?
A cannabinoid is a chemical compound found in plants and the human body.  Plant cannabinoids are known as phytocannabinoids, and cannabinoids made by mammals are known as endocannabinoids.  You may have heard of a few popular phytocannabinoids, such as THC and CBD which are found in the cannabis plant, along with over 100 more like CBG & CBN.
Cannabinoid receptors (microscopic connectors where cannabinoids interact with the body) are found most concentrated in the central and peripheral nervous systems.  While the human brain has the most known cannabinoid receptors, the heart, adrenal glands, male & female reproductive organs, lungs, bone marrow, and tonsils also have receptors.  Humans are not the only ones with endocannabinoid systems since your dog & lizard have them, too!  Read more about Pets and CBD

How Does the Endocannabinoid System Work?
Cannabinoids & cannabinoid receptors make up the endocannabinoid system.  Cannabinoids bind with the cannabinoid receptors in the body to effect its communication system, also known as your neurotransmitters.  For example, neurotransmitters receive information from your nerve endings that you’re touching something hot and send the signal your brain.  In return, your brain responds by signaling your hand to move off of the stove.  Neurotransmitters can also tell the brain when you get the flu so it can send healthy cells to fight the infection, or when you break your arm.  Cannabinoids, like CBD (cannabidiol), have been shown to potentially down-regulate the inflammatory response in the body and reduce chronic pain.  Ultimately, CBD interferes to reduce pain-causing inflammation.  Read more on CBD and Pain
Studies on CBD have shown that it does not appear to have psychotropic effects, meaning you won’t feel high like with THC, but it may have anti-anxiety  effects.  Commonly, CBD comes in two varieties – Full Spectrum Distillate, meaning it offers an array of CBD with other cannabinoids & terpenes, or Isolate, which comes in powder form and it 90%+ pure CBD without other cannabinoids.  Read more on Full Spectrum vs Isolate
CBD can be taken a number of ways: inhalation through smoking or vaporizing, buccal or sublingually under the tongue, swallowed internally, or used topically on the skin.   There are a wide number of products out there like topical skin salves, under the tongue tinctures, CBD-only isolate, Full spectrum distillate, capsules, oils, vape juice, and many others.  See what we have to offer!

Natural, High Quality CBD For My Pets and Me

Why wouldn’t you want to treat your pets as well as you treat yourself? At Fully Activated, we create yummy pet treats and tinctures for our furry friends and use the same standards as we do for our human products. This means that Buca Biscuits, our CBD dog treats, are organic & GMO-free, and each biscuit contains exactly the amount of CBD as stated.
Precision and quality control is very important to us. We only use the best ingredients from organic sources, and we create everything in small batches – each time. Other products may not be clear on where they are coming from or how they’re being made, the health of our pets and our customers is of utmost importance to us. Many real life experiences and several studies have proven that animals (most notably, dogs) can potentially experience similar benefits from CBD that humans feel.
Research on pets and the use of CBD is still new, but the evidence is extremely positive so far. As Gary Richter, DVM, says, “animals can benefit…for many of the same reasons it helps people – for pain, seizure control, gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety-related issues.”
We use CBD as a preventative daily treatment and on specific ailments for our petts and have for more than a decade. Since our pets have endocannabinoid systems, just like we do, it only makes sense.

4 Tips for CBD Dosages

How do you know how much CBD to take?
Well, there’s not a standard or straightforward answer to this common question.  Everyone is different and we are not medical professionals so we cannot offer specific dosage solutions, but we’re happy to offer examples and information that can help you decide what regiment is best for you and your needs.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant.  The most common cannabinoid is THC, which will give you the feeling of being “high”, unlike CBD.   THC is typically the most abundant cannabinoid in a cannabis plant, while CBD is the second most common, with the exception of hemp plants (like ours!) that have been crossed to offer high CBD with only the slightest bit of THC.  You can choose Full Spectrum CBD products that offer a wide variety of cannabinoids like CBD and THC, or choose a Pure CBD product that only contains CBD isolate with zero THC or other cannabinoids.  The difference in Full Spectrum or Pure may also slightly change the effects of the dosage you choose.

Best Practices

5:10 The average recommended dose is typically about 5mg of CBD per 10lbs of body weight.  This rule is applicable to both humans and pets alike.  For example, if you weigh 150lbs, divided by 10 is 15, multiplied by 5mg is 75mg.  This can vary greatly depending on body type, tolerance, and level of pain.  Someone with high levels of chronic pain may need more than someone looking for a more preventative approach.

Start Low and Slow Your best bet when beginning a CBD regiment is to start with a low dosage and work your way up until you reach your desired effect or relief.  If you’re nervous at all about how it may affect you, start even lower and work your way up.  If you have stronger pain, it might take more than the mentioned dose to help alleviate some of your symptoms.

Less but More Decreasing the amount of your dose while increasing the frequency may also solve some issues for your trial period.  For example, instead of taking all 75mg at once, break the dosages into three doses of 25mg over the course of the day.  This will help overall absorption of the CBD and a more sustained presence in your bloodstream.

Quality over Quantity All CBD is not created equal.  The quality of the plants from which CBD is harvested is very important.  Our hemp plants are naturally grown and have been crossed over and over to produce high levels of CBD.  This quality will make a difference versus someone who produces CBD hemp oil that offers no specific concentration of CBD on the label.

What’s the Difference between Full Spectrum CBD & Pure CBD?

There are hundreds of cannabinoids in the cannabis plant, as well as, endocannabinoids in the body.  Endocannabinoids & the endocannabinoid system are found in humans, animals, & fish.  The human endocannabinoid system consists of a network of receptors throughout the body, like organs, brain, glands, tissues, and immune cells.  The endocannabinoids can help regulate and influence several bodily functions like pain, pleasure, muscle control, mood, appetite, memory, and more.
CBD commonly comes in two forms: Full Spectrum CBD Distillate & Pure CBD Isolate.
But what’s the difference?

Pure CBD Isolate
CBD isolate is an extract made of pure cannabidiol (CBD) without any other cannabinoids, like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).  The CBD is “isolated” from 99% of anything else in the plant like matter, fats, oils, terpenes, THC, & other cannabinoids.  Consequently, pure CBD isolate is non-psychoactive.  Isolate typically comes in a powder or slab and can be used for a number of purposes.  Here are 4 ways to use isolate.

Full Spectrum CBD Distillate
Full Spectrum CBD means it has a large number of CBD and offers a number of other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.  These other cannabinoids will be determined by the type of cannabis is used to create the distillate.  Some plants will be higher in cannabinoids like CBN, CBG, & THC-V, than others.  It also contains THC, but less than .3% (as mandated by law).  Studies have shown that using full spectrum can sometimes enhance the effects of the cannabinoids involved further, than when compared to CBD isolate.  This is called the “entourage effect”.
Both offer healing properties of CBD, but you can decide for yourself which might be best for your experience.  Different cannabinoids can address different issues in the body.  Have you heard about the cannabinoids that can be found in our Fully Activated Full Spectrum CBD products?  Studies have shown that the following cannabinoids might offer the following benefits:

Cannabidiol (CBD)

Antibacterial
Inhibit cancerous cell growth
Reduces inflammation
Calms vomiting and nausea
Relieves anxiety
Suppresses muscle spasms

CBN (Cannabinol)

Pain reliever
Reduces seizures
Promotes bone growth
Reduces blood sugar levels

CBC (Cannabichromene)

Reduces inflammation
Helps with sleep
Suppresses muscle spasms

CBG (Cannabigerol)

Anti-inflammatory
Pain reliever
Anti-bacteria
Anti-fungal
Inhibits cell growth in tumors

4 Ways To Use CBD Isolate

We offer 99.6% pure CBD Isolate Slab & 99.4% CBD Isolate Powder that our customers can buy by the gram or in bulk.  Pure CBD Isolate is the pure form of cannabidiol which we extract from our organically-grown, local CBD-rich hemp plants without presence of other cannabinoids.  Many people have used CBD isolate for nausea, vomiting, inflammation, chronic pain, anxiety, depression, & can suppress spasmodic activity.

This is some of the purest form of CBD that you can get, with oils, fats, and other organic material extracted from the original plant matter.  CBD is non-psychoactive and can be used in a number of ways!

Sublingual
While there are many creative ways to incorporate CBD into your daily regiment, one of the simplest ways is to place a small amount of isolate under the tongue and allow it to absorb.  Sublingual literally means “under tongue” and can take 30-90 seconds to fully absorb, depending on quantity.  Benefits to taking CBD sublingually include quick and easy absorption into the bloodstream.  Many have reported that some CBD has a slightly cherry taste, so it’s not quite tasteless, but it also does not have the same flavor as hemp or THC extracts.  If you don’t want to put it directly under your tongue as a powder, you can put some into coconut oil and hold under your tongue for 90seconds.

Smoke Show
Many prefer to smoke their CBD through vaping or dabbing.  Fully Activated offers a CBD vape juice, or you can choose to make your own.  Our Full Spectrum CBD Vape Juice is unflavored, and some prefer to add their isolate to a flavored vape juice instead.  CBD Isolate slabs can also be dabbed in a pen or on a rig relatively easily.  CBD has a slightly higher sublimation temperature than THC, meaning it takes just a little bit more heat to turn pure CBD from solid to gas than pure THC.  It’s not a huge difference, so it won’t matter unless you have an very specific heating tool like an e-nail or digital temperature gauge.  Additionally, you can add CBD to your other smoking choices.

Topically Apply
Fully Activated offers topicals like salve, body balm, tattoo after care, and CBD burn cream, but the possibilities are endless if you want to create your own topicals.  You can simply dissolve your pure CBD isolate into coconut or jojoba oil and rub into your skin, add it to your favorite face wash, lotion, or sunscreen!  CBD isolate can offer anti-inflammatory and pain-reduction properties, and it could help alleviate joint aches and pains with use.

Ingest It
Slightly different than sublingual use, ingesting pure CBD isolate goes through the digestive system, moreso than being directly absorbed into the bloodstream in the mouth.  There is no “bad way” to include CBD in this category.  You can add some to your juice, or even your pesto for dinner.  Since our CBD isolate is practically tasteless, it will hardly interfere with any flavor profiles that you’re working with.  If you want to include it in a simple olive oil dressing, you’ll hardly be able to tell.

There are so many ways to use CBD.  What’s your favorite?  If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Is CBD for You?

What About CBD?
CBD (or cannabidiol) is a compound known as a cannabinoid and is most abundantly found in hemp plants.  There are 100+ cannabinoids found in the hemp plant, and CBD currently offers the most promising as a natural pain reliever as some research studies have shown.  The human body has its own endocannabinoid system and produces some endocannabinoids of its own.  The endocannabinoid system can help regulate functions such as sleep, immune-system responses, and pain.  Animals, like our pets, also have endocannabinoid systems.  CBD is non-psychoactive and can provide great benefits for humans and animals alike.

Will CBD Get Me High?
Not to be confused with THC, CBD will not give you the “high” feeling that marijuana will.  CBD is extracted from industrial hemp, not a marijuana plant.  The plants are closely related, but offer entirely different crops.  Industrial hemp is required by law to be <.03% THC or the crop is destroyed.  THC (tetrahydracannabinol).

Why Would I Try It?
CBD can be used as a successful pain blocker, reducing the amount of pain a person feels and could reduce inflammation of the nervous system, potentially alleviating symptoms of immune system responses, insomnia, or pain.  It’s important to know that not all CBD is created equal.  Since there is no current regulation standard on quality and efficiency, it can be hard to know the difference.  Our plants are high quality, naturally-grown hemp that have been strategically crossed to offer high concentrations of CBD while maintaining the <.03% concentration of THC.

What Are My Options?
There are several ways to use CBD and everyone can respond differently.  For some with arthritis or skin issues, topical full spectrum CBD salves can be enough to help alleviate some pain and stiffness.  For others, internal usage of high dosage full spectrum CBD or pure CBD only tincture could offer the most relief for chronic pain or systemic inflammation.  CBD isolate is also a great way to intake CBD.  Isolate can be used in a number of ways from topically, internally, or smokable with things like vape juice.

At Fully Activated, we guarantee natural high-quality CBD products.  We make our products in small batches to ensure the integrity of the product.  Try some for yourself today!

CBD Success Stories

We created this company to offer tools to help support your health and, without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today.  Our passion for creating high quality CBD products is fed by the stories and feedback we’ve received from our customers over the years.  We’ve witnessed life-changing stories about decreased epileptic episodes and improvements with pet separation anxiety.  Many have reported quick pain relief from our Full Spectrum CBD salve and long lasting migraine reduction from our CBD Isolate, among a variety of other ailments supported by our pure CBD and full spectrum CBD tinctures and vape juice.  We are always listening and love supporting our clients with all the information needed to feel comfortable using any of our products.
We can talk to you all day about our products and how they may be beneficial to your wellbeing, but we would rather let you read these success stories for yourself.
On CBD Isolate, Full Spectrum CBD Salve, & Full Spectrum Lip & Body Balm for Sleep, Inflammation, & Sore Muscles:

“I recently discovered this company and I am so glad I did! I’ve had previous experience using some high CBD cannabis, but I always wanted to try the isolated form without any psychoactive effects. My main reasons for using CBD are to help with sleep issues and also decrease inflammation in my muscles and joints from following a pretty demanding exercise routine.
I tried their CBD Isolate both in the “slab” form and pure powdered crystal form, as well as the Full Spectrum Salve (this stuff is amazing!) and their Full Spectrum CBD Lip & Body Balm.
Both the “slab” form and powdered CBD isolate have completely resolved my sleep issues. They both provide a very nice calming effect that relaxes all the muscles and mind. There are some scientific studies that suggest CBD helps lengthen deep sleep and I definitely notice a huge difference in my sleep lately. It’s been years since I’ve slept well consistently, and I am incredibly grateful to have finally found something that works without the negative side effects that come with prescription sleep medications. Even when I take breaks some nights, I am still sleeping well. Just an FYI, the “slab” form of the CBD isolate is best used if you plan on vaporizing and inhaling. I would make sure you have a milligram scale so you can accurately measure out an appropriate amount, because you don’t need to use a lot! The most efficient way for the body to absorb CBD is through vaporization. The second best way to take CBD is via sublingual administration (under the tongue). I used the CBD isolate powder to make my own tincture by mixing it with some MCT oil.
The Lip & Body Balm and the Fully Spectrum Salve are both very well made topical products. I have been doing a lot of long distance running this summer. When I get sore muscles and knees after my long runs I spread them around my knees and on my calf and thigh muscles. I noticed that there was a definite decrease in muscle and knee soreness after using these and I felt stronger when I was running after using them because of the quicker recovery time. My training peaked at a few 18 mile runs, which really takes its toll on the body and these products helped immensely. The Full Spectrum Salve has a more creamy texture that spreads on easily, while the Lip & Body Balm is a little thicker in an easy to carry stick form, that’s great for taking with you when you’re on the go. They both have pleasant, but not overpowering calendula smell.
Overall, Fully Activated has the best prices around without sacrificing quality. Everything is well packaged and their balms and salves have excellent natural ingredients. If you’ve never tried their products or our new to CBD, definitely give them a try!” – J.D. (Google Reviews)

On Full Spectrum CBD Tincture & Full Spectrum Salve for Chronic Pain and Trigeminal Neuralgia:
“I purchased the starter kit I believe Monday night, and it arrived Saturday morning. Keep in mind I’m 1,700 miles away give or take, so that was great in itself. Before it arrived, I was chatting with the page to learn more, and they are so informative and helpful. I purchased upon recommendation from someone my husband knows to help with my Trigeminal Neuralgia. I just used the Full Spectrum Tincture for the first time, so I will have to update once I see results. I have very high hopes for this! If you’re in the market for some great hemp product, definitely try Fully Activated because I’ve had such an excellent experience so far. I’ll put some photos in the comments of the starter kit because it’s so nice to look at, too.
Update 9/30/2017: So it’s several hours later on the day I received the products and I already have seen differences! I also have migraines (yep, I can’t just have one crappy thing in my face lol) and I rub the salve on the area that hurts and within minutes it’s back to normal!!! I also haven’t had a true flare up of my Trigeminal Neuralgia since I used the tincture either. I have TN 1 and 2, with mainly tension in my jaw area. I use the salve on that as well and it’s relieving so much tension and the burning pain!!!! My life is already changing because of these products. If you don’t know what TN is, it’s a neuropathic disorder of the fifth cranial nerve. It causes excruciating shocking and stabbing facial pain sometimes when touched, other times just randomly. This has effected every area of my life, and I was recently ruled out for a corrective surgery. The pharmaceuticals aren’t working. But this is! I’m finally finding some relief from this pain!!! I can’t recommend these products enough and it’s only day one.
Update 10/02/2017: The salve has definitely been a lifesaver when I feel oncoming pain because for me it stops it dead in its tracks. I’ll be honest, every once in a while I just go “holy crap…I don’t hurt.” It’s so so strange because I’ve had chronic head pain for as long as I can remember, and adding the TN starting back in May. My grandma also has generalized chronic pain and used salve on one shoulder yesterday and was extremely impressed and will likely be getting her own soon. I’ve been using the full spectrum tincture more and it seems to be preventing flare ups a lot. It’s like the tincture and salve are working as a team for me. The tincture tries to prevent everything, and then the salve is there just in case I feel a flare up starting. Really, this stuff is INCREDIBLE. I am beyond impressed.”-M.G.  (Facebook Reviews)

CBD & Your Pet’s Health

One of our biggest reasons for creating high quality CBD products is for our pets.  Fully Activated has a long family history of fostering dogs and cats and rehabilitating animals with CBD, and we want to share our experience with you.

The first major source of inspiration for launching Fully Activated was our founder Nick’s dog, Buca. Buca was an intelligent full-blooded pitbull and a great companion.  She was placed on a regular regiment of CBD her entire life and Nick believes this was key to her health.  As she grew older, Buca naturally slowed down, but she never got sick and always maintained a fervor for life.  She eventually died of old age, and this was the kick Nick needed to completely launch Fully Activated. Our CBD pet line, Buca’s Biscuits, was named in her honor.
Nick and his wife Courtney have since adopted and fostered several dogs, all of which are offered a CBD-rich diet.  One of their dogs, Tigger, unfortunately suffers from tumors. Nick and Courtney administer a daily regiment for Tigger and their other animals to help with immune support and symptom mitigation.
If you’re looking for a regimen for your animal, we’ve provided a list of dosages, supplements, vitamins & minerals that may be beneficial to your pet’s healing. This pet health regimen is based on Nick and Courtney’s experience, and you should always consult a veterinarian before altering your pet’s diet or administering supplements.
Full Spectrum CBD
Full Spectrum CBD twice a day. Nick and Courtney typically go by the rule of 1mg per pound with their pets.
Benadryl
1mg per pound, split into two daily doses.  It can help with allergic reactions and skin reactions and is an anti-histamine which can help calm the inflammatory reaction of the body.
Turkey Tail Mushrooms
Turkey Tail mushrooms have been shown to offer favorable results with women suffering from chemo treatments for breast cancer.
Milk Thistle
A well-known liver tonic & powerful antioxidant that can help support the body’s purification system for humans and pets alike.  It helps with liver and kidney damage, and also helps repair organ damage.
Fish Oil
Incorporating fish oil can offer big benefits for your pet.  Fish Oil offers omega-6, omega-3, and polyunsaturated fats.  Omega-6’s decrease inflammation, cell growth, and blood clotting.  Omega-3’s balance Omega-6’s and can be an anti-inflammatory agent especially with regard to allergies & arthritis.  The 3’s and fats can improve skin, coat, and joint health and improve cognitive function.
Dog Probiotics
Not the same as human probiotics!  Dogs and humans have different types of gut bacteria, and while some of them are the same, our furry friends have a number of strains that we don’t have.  We both share Lactobacillus & Bifidobacterium, but two additional healthy gut bacteria to support in your dog are Bacillus coagulans & Enterococcus faecium.  A healthy gut helps support better digestion and a healthier immune system!
Golden Paste (Turmeric & Coconut oil)
Turmeric is one of the most potent natural anti-inflammatories and a great antioxidant.  The coconut oil offers healthy fats for the body.  The paste can be given in food or applied topically to troublesome areas.
Glucosamine / Chondroitin Complex
These two supplements make up the building blocks for cartilage in the body.  They have been regularly used for arthritis support and to encourage further cartilage production.
CoQ10 – Coenzyme Q10
It has been shown to improve symptoms related to congestive heart failure, support nervous system dysfunction, and may help with energy production.

We recommend talking to your vet before making any changes to your pet’s health regiment. When you think about your health or your pet’s health, think about supporting the major systems of the body like circulatory, nervous, and digestive. If you have any questions, please contact us directly.
